Stars Draft Review
September 22, 2019
The Stars originally came in to the Draft with 5 picks but like every other draft day, GM Decelles gets too excited and swings a few deals to get his hands on more picks...

"The draft was looking really good for us up until picks #51 through #57, where all the other teams picked the players from our short list one after the other..." said GM Decelles.

Although the Stars scouting staff was left a bit stunned, the group was well prepared to make selections the rest of the way and feel they finished the draft with a solid group of prospects:

#58 - Vladislav Kolyachonok - The Flint Firebird defenceman skates like the wind and managed hefty minutes all year with a very poor squad. His showing at the U-18's for Belarus was a good indication that this puck mover has elite talent and is poised to make the jump to the next level with a little more experience.

#62 - Taro Hirose - For the 2nd straight year, GM Decelles selects the NCAA's leading scorer. This pass first winger from Michigan State has great hockey IQ and could find himself in the Stars lineup as soon as next season.

#64 - Vladislav Gavrikov - GM Decelles makes the un-sexy pick here with Gavrikov but one that could make the most impact. He will not wow you with points but at 6'3, 205lbs with 5 years of KHL experience, 3 World Championships and 1 Olympic Gold Medal - he's a type of player you need to go deep in the playoffs. Smart, shut down defender with the best resume in the draft.

#80 - Filip Larsson - Life after Lundqvist is coming for the Stars, its time to fill up the goalie pipeline. The former USHL Goaltender of the Year had a stellar Freshman year at the University of Denver where he carried them to the Final Four. Larsson is turning Pro this year and the Stars hope to have found a potential incumbent to King Henrik.

#95 - Graeme Clarke - A slick stick handler from the Ottawa 67's - his creativity and knack for scoring is what the Stars scouts loved about Clarke's game. Should see a significant increase in points this year.

#109 - Riley Damiani - The Kitchener Rangers centreman was voted as one of the most improved players in the OHL this year. Smaller in stature, Damiani makes up for it in effort and leadership. Poised for a big year, if healthy he might lead the OHL in scoring.

#120 - Isaiah Saville - Adding to the the goalie pipeline for the 2nd time in draft - the Stars opted to select the USHL Goalie of the Year. In Saville they are getting an athletic south paw who put up incredible USHL numbers and helped Team USA in the JR A World Champioships. Headed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha - Saville will look hone his craft and turn pro sooner than later.
