Oilers Off To Hot Start
December 21, 2017
The offseason looked bleak in Edmonton. Fans were crippled to hear that the team had surprisingly bought out Mike Cammalleri, Benoit Pouliot and Mark Stuart. Then came the news of Kevin Klein's retirement, leaving Edmonton with many holes to fill and with little to show in the farm system, trade avenues became obstacles.

The team was fortunately able to sign Patrick Sharp, Brandon Pirri, Ryan Murphy and Greg McKegg during free agency to bolster some depth.

A small trade with the Carolina Hurricanes brought in Josh Gorges. It was a good trade for both teams, Gorges was likely headed for waivers and the Oilers needed a body to fill a second pairing hole.

Despite a whirlwind of new and young players added to the team, Edmonton is off to a hot start. Winners of their last 2, holding an 11-5-1 record - tied for second most wins in the Western Conference.

Blake Wheeler has carried the load for the Oilers, sitting third in league assists and second in league scoring.

There were rumours early on in the season that Wheeler was going to be dealt for depth and replenish youth in the organization, however nothing came of those rumours and he's playing as though he has something to prove.

The Oilers look to continue their success against the equally matched Chicago Blackhawks, in a game that will determine who holds 3rd place in the Western Conference.
