Farewell To Captain
July 27, 2019
It has finally come to an end. New York Islanders’ long time serving captain and the franchise legend, Erik Karlsson is traded to Toronto Maple Leafs.

The deal was announced on Saturday shortly after Karlsson agreed to a 8-year, 92M contract. Instead of hitting the open market, he chose to agree to an extension of a maximum 8-year term. It also helped the Islanders to recoup some asset by acquiring a 1st round pick, a 4th round pick and defenseman Derek Forbort from the Maple Leafs.

“It was a pure business decision,” said GM Park, “Erik(Karlsson) loves the city and the city loves him. Nobody wanted to see him leave. I never wanted him to leave. But, the reality is we are living in the hard-cap era.”

“He was not only our best defenseman days-in, days-out. (Karlsson) Was a tremendous leader and the face of franchise. He will be dearly missed on and off the ice. We wish him the very best in his new journey.”

After shipping out Karlsson and Edmundson, the Islanders are approximately 11M under the cap with RFA Mitch Marner still remaining unsigned.
