The Lightning had a goal of shoring up the backend through free agency and they were able to accomplish that with a couple of signings. The first was to bring in a veteran dman who would be comfortable in that 5-6 pairing. Hamhuis was willing to sign a 2 year deal with the club at a reasonable contract of $1.25M. The second signing was to bring back defensive dman Calvin De Haan who tested the free agent waters briefly before ultimately deciding to come back to the beautiful beaches of Tampa by signing a 4 year deal at an AVV of $4.55M.

The team also added 4th line winger Chiasson who will add to the forward depth as he fills a short term need with a few prospects like Goldobin, Svechnikov and Quenneville get their feet wet in the farm before making the jump next year.
