Tampa Bay Lightning Draft Review
September 19, 2018
Going into the draft with only a few 3rd round picks the team seemed to be in line for a quiet couple of days. However, the team decided to make three separate trades. The first move was to turn the 84th pick in the draft into a 5th round pick along with two defensemen prospects in Max Gildon and Cale Fleury who were both selected in the 3rd round in last year's draft. The team also traded a 4th round pick in next year's draft for two 5th round picks this year. The final move was to shed some salary in the form of backup goalie Anders Nilson, his $2.5M salary became unnecessary with the club resigning Domingue to a cheaper 2 year deal earlier in the summer.

3rd Round Review: The club selected Zach Whitecloud who should add to the lacking depth on the blueline after a few years of seasoning down in the AHL. The other pick in this round was C David Gustafsson who the team feels they can wait on to develop as the forward group on the team is secure for the next few years.

5th Round Review: With four picks in this round the team felt it needed to address the lack of competition for the bottom pairing on the blueline for the big club and it did just that with when they selected both Ben Harpur and Dean Kukan. Both these dmen have progressed along the last few years to the point where they should be able to step up as 6th or 7th on the depth chart right away. The last two picks kept with the theme of this year's draft to restock down the middle and on the backend. Both C Jasper Weatherby and D Dimitry Semykin have enough side that the club can hope to develop them long term.

Overall Tampa is quite happy to have added 8 quality pieces to their already deep pool of prospects and now focus their attention on FA period. With about $10-12M in cap space we will see how they choose to use it whether that be through free agency or trades has yet to be determined.
