2020 Post Draft Update
September 16, 2019
The Leafs weren't planning on having a pick in this years draft but ended up having 2 picks in the 2020 Draft. With pick #68 in the 3rd round the Leafs were very happy to select WHL Player of the year last season right winger Joachim Blichfeld. Blichfeld won the WHL scoring title last season with 53 goals and 61 assists for 114 points. At 6'2 181 he has great size and once he bulks up a bit he has the frame to make things happen. "Blichfeld is the whole reason we traded Bracco to the Rangers to secure the picks to draft him." Bracco himself had a great year in the AHL scoring 79 points in 75 games but Leafs GM Polley wasn't sure they have the spot open for him right now and feel he is ready to make the jump to the NHL. "We went with the younger winger because Bracco deserves the chance to play and we didn't feel there was spot in our lineup right now for a right winger" Polley said. The right side of the leafs lineup is pretty crowded. With Tarasenko, Reinhart, Compher and Armia in those positions, Bracco most likely would not see the playing time that he deserves.

With pick #123 in the 4th round the Leafs pick up a depth defense man in Radim Simek. Simek is a stay at home d man with the potential to be a 1st or 2nd pairing guy. The leafs would like to develop a couple of their younger guys a bit longer before they can get in the line up full time and Simek will allow them to do that.
