Capitals Have Successful Draft/Make Huge Economic Gains
September 10, 2019
"I don't know what to tell you. I was on the beach in the Florida and I get a text from my director of scouting IP Freeley that he was quitting. He said, you do the draft. I am like, great, power is spotty, winds are blowing and I have to do the whole thing on my phone, no draft lists, nothing. After cussing out Freeley's entire lineage, I had no choice." Said GM Bachul.

"In the first, I have known that if we want to pick up one or two players in UFA, we need to have some coin. I worked with Lewie on this deal, no shit, since July 25. He is a gem and great to work with. Problem was that the draft was shaking weird. Broberg was dropping and if he was there at 20, we would have certainly took him there, and McMichael at 22. But Connor is a goal scorer, he will get 50 in the OHL this year and next year who knows. We certainly love getting this kid."

At that point the Caps moved on the deal that was started in summer moving out pick 22, a 4th and 5th with Andrew Cogliano for Johan Larsson and $8.25 million.

"We have moved from the bottom in Free Agency to mid pack. Losing Panarin hurt so we might try to add some punch up front."

At pick 48 the Caps made another deal moving the pick for NJ 3rd and another $2000000. "It puts us in an even better position."

With pick 50, the Caps grabbed a player that spent all season ranked in the tail end of the first round. "Being from Edmonton, I know the Oil Kings very well. Matty being hurt for much of the year affected his draft stock. But that is to our benefit. We feel we drafted two first round talents with our first two picks."

Pick 76 acquired earlier was used to select overage defenseman Joel Persson. "He is a player that could make our team out of camp and help contribute. He is 25 and ready to play in the WEHL. Kudos to our scouts."

With the next pick the Caps selected Russian Yegor Spiridonov. "He has been a good player in Russia. He has to work on his skating but is reliable at both ends. We have lots of thoroughbreds, and he might be a great clydesdale for us."

The Caps then had back to back picks and selected Michal Teply and Joakim Nygaard in the fourth round. "Our Euro guy really liked Teply. Said he was similar in style to Blake Wheeler. With Nygaard, he is an absolute burner. We like his speed so that will compliment the other guys we took today."

Finally the Caps took Antti Saarela. "Saarela comes from a good system but he at this point we think he has some upside. But who wouldn't like a guy whose name rhymes with mozzarella?"
